I would have looked in their gullets / stomach to see if they had been previously hooked and stress killed them. Yes and then maybe put a warning label on all bass over 19 pounds? ***Insert sarcasm**** Why yes your royal highness! Now for my real answer...just to be curious as to what may have caused their demise. seriously everyone knows it was that nasty virus, the one that increases and extends unemployment benefits

the trees were so thick that nobody could get to where these monsters were lurking. They got that big from TPWD stocking Florida Strain LM in the brood ponds for years prior to the lake flooding and they swimming out.
There was another big ole bass found floating by the 2946 bridge as well by the Smith brothers. All well before the 99 fish kill.

That is an interesting story about how they planned and carried out the stocking before the lake was built! I bet they kept a good eye on all the ponds to keep people out!

The lake was impounded in 1980 correct? What year was it stocked? It didn't reach full pool until 1985 right? Seems like that fish hit it's max weight just about as quickly as biologically possible. That's how much max fertility and low fishing pressure matters.

I was still working a real job in Dallas. I went to lunch with a co-worker and told him I sure wish I was fishing. It was a very mild day probably mid 70's and sunny & light wind. That afternoon I got word that Mark had caught the new state record. That should give you an idea if what was swimming around in those brood ponds.

Dr. Dale Sandvall sent me this pic of the replica of the fish that was found by Brian Duplechain. It resides at Fisherman's One Stop on Hwy 515 between the two big bridges. Good folks run this store and they carry a good selection of tackle.
