What are your criteria for donating an organ, like a kidney while still alive. Word is doaners recover in 3-4 weeks without complication. Thoughts?

I'm pretty old. My stuff is about wore out. I was surprised to learn that your liver is one thing you can donate a part of, and it regenerates.

I’ve never crossed that bridge yet but I was a few days away from being a bone marrow donor. I guess it depends how you feel about the situation. In my situation a young girl in the community had a cancer where she needed a bone marrow transplant. I got tested to see if I was a match. While there I signed up to be a donor. A few years went by and I was contacted by the University of Iowa Hospitals saying I was a match for someone in need of a transplant. No clue who it was but I told them that I’d do it. Before the procedure I was told that I wasn’t needed. I guess I figured if it could help someone I’d do it

That’s honorable! Makes me rethink my answer. Depends on the situation I guess.

If it would help, I’d do it. No question. But...I haven’t taken the best care of my body over the years....and probably wouldn’t be a candidate for a donor. But...I would try.

Thinking I would, saving a life or extending one of someone you love or care about is a honor whatever the circumstances may be.

Currently I’m not an organ donor but if the opportunity presented itself I’d do it for a loved one. Never thought enough about it for someone else but that is very honorable

One of my clients had a kidney transplant from their spouse. The recovery was more difficult on the donor than it was on the recipient. I had a lady in church that donated one to her son about 23 years ago...She's now in her 70's and he's 46 (3 months younger than me).

A longtime friend of the family received a liver transplant 2 years ago...she was knocking on death's door pretty hard and frequently before the transplant. She did have a scare in late 2020 when her body started to try and reject it...they had to change her meds again. Her mom was in the hospital with Covid at the time, and I'm sure the stress of that added to it. Thankfully the mom and daughter are now fine.

I would give a family member or really close friend my kidney. I would donate part of my liver, or give bone marrow to a stranger. I am a registered organ donor.

Awesome ! I have the same sentiments.

Folks would be surprised how often families reject organ donation in the hospital setting when a relative is brain dead.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.
