I have gut hooked a fish twice recently and I couldn't get the hook out through the mouth or the gills on the side of the face. Is there a way to reduce this? I feel terrible putting a fish back with a hook down its throat. Should I set the hook sooner? Use a smaller hook? (I was using a 4/0 swimbait hook texas rigged on a 3.8 inch rage swimmer).

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

Can I ask why you couldnt get it out through the gills? You know how to do it the right way, right? Sorry for asking the stupid question but just wanna make sure. Ive become a bit of a fish surgeon cuz I suck at fishing....but sometimes smallies are hard to get out through the gill, so i get it happens. Just had to ask.

Sometimes it just happens. It's a part of fishing. Not a big deal

If you can grab the round of the hook, squeeze the players tight, and do a downward jerk and pop action. Quick and slightly to the side is often better than trying plyer surgery through their gills.

The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

Your eyes see a bite before your hands feel a bite. Watch for rod flexion that is different than normal with bottom contact or just normal retrieve like a swimbait. A more sensitive rod you would notice a paddle tail stop paddling as well. I will try to find the Tactical Bassin video about it

This, and if that doesn't work, the gill method will. Really no reason to ever leave a hook in the throat once you learn how to do these methods. Watch Honey Hole, he never goes through the gills on deep hooked fish and always pops the hook out. It gets harder the smaller the fish though.

C-rig is the worst for deep hooking, no matter how sensitive your rod is.

Thanks. I was thinking this was certainly part of the problem since I was out of town so I bought a cheap rod from walmart and left all my rods at home.

I've watched the Tactical Bassin guys make a video on how to do it but this was my first time ever trying the technique and I couldn't pull it off. The fish had a small mouth which didn't help. I've watched it and other videos again so I can make sure I get it out next time.
