Agree with comments above. At about the 4/5 lb mark you should be using two hands. Fish have a ton of variation just like people. Everything from bone density and ligament strength to the weight distribution of the fish is going to come into play. When in doubt, just use two hands.

It only hurts them when you have a 6-9 lb bass holding it out as far as you can to make it look like a 10 pounder.
