I see lots of folks doing it and I suppose the species has survived so I realize it's not a life and death issue, but I see "PSA"s at Cabela's and Bass Pro that say holding fish that way breaks their jaw and makes it harder to feed when you release them. Have you all ever heard that? Do you hold fish with one hand or two hands for pictures?

All my fish require two hands.

I don’t this it’s the broken jaw that makes it hard for them to feed so much as the filet knife down both sides.

I've met people who are adamant about not doing it and say you're going to kill the fish, and I've met people who say if it's potentially going to kill the fish why isn't there a mass die off after tournaments/weigh ins. If it's a smaller fish I don't worry about it, if it has some weight to it I'll be careful and use two hands...

Go to a ramp a day or two after a big tournament and look at all the dead or dying big bass that were lip grabbed for the posing shots.

The bigger the fish the more likely to cause damage.

I think it’s an issue for the really big bass. I don’t believe the dinks I catch have ongoing problems because I held them by the jaw.

I guess you could drill a hole in the tail up near the fish buttocks and then run a bolt through there with some type of clevis and hoist them up with a winch. That would probably be better.

Once they have settled down, support them with both hands when possible.

Holding them horizontally by the jaw is very, very bad.

Once they have calmed down, weighing them vertically by the lip with a clip or holding them vertically for a ten second picture is fine.

It’s when you hold them by the jaw and then bend your wrist horizontally that their jaw can suffer damage.

Don’t do this (see how the jaw is bending forward as the wrist extends)

Yes, gotta give the fish some support if you're going to home them horizontal.

I think holding it by the jaw is a lot easier on the fish than when I put a filet knife thru them

few seconds for a pic then release is no big deal if you keep them vertical, 4# and over should have both hands tho.
