This year I'm going to the end of the South Jetty to throw big spoons for bull reds, jack crevalle, and maybe an outside chance at a tarpon. While I have extensive inshore experience, my jetty fishing knowledge is more limited. I uaed the Sea Striker spoons last year and the one big hit ruined the split ring attached to the hook, and I didn't like that there wasn't a split ring/swivel to tie my main line to. Which 1-3 oz spoon would you recommend? I have a big Penn spinning reel and 10 foot rod with 40 lb braid, so I'm good there. Thank you.

Kastmaster, crocodile, and even a 1 oz Johnson sprite will catch fish. You can go with bigger jig spoons instead of flutter spoons, but they are harder to keep up in the water column, resulting in hang-ups. I would also try a 1500 series Gotcha lure. They can be deadly from the jetty. You may want to add a short steel leader so you don’t feed the Spanish and king mackerel.

Thank you Osbornfishing. I did ponder the idea of kings and smacks. I think I'd prefer to stick with 40 lb mono leader, but if I come back with clean cuts a few times, I'll probably have to break out the piano wire as a backup. Great input. Much appreciated.

You might also want to take some top water lures, like a mirrolure top dog. Jack crevalle love them if they are around. Again remember that the toothy critters are out there. If I am past the beach, I almost always use steel leader, even when I fly fish. You just never know.

id run steel unless you plan to donate tackle...i tried your method kings can clean cut 80lb mono on a regular basis when on the rocks..Remember you have to get them up the rocks.
