Hey guys,

Feel like all my posts recently have been about surf fishing...

Anyways, I have a few 9 and 10 ft rods for throwing 2-3oz weights in a bit closer I’m guessing between the first and second trough, beyond the second if I wade out or get a particularly long cast. Honestly I feel like most of the beaches I surf fish at dont have long unbroken bars where it’s easy to identify from the waves breaking, but many fragmented bars so between the 1st and 2nd bar is my guesstimate.

I’m also looking to add a set up for tossing a chunk bait, maybe like a small croaker or mullet cut in half, out deeper on 5-6oz weights, and was looking for some recommendations! I was also considering a conventional reel just to learn more about the different ways to fish.
- is a 12ft rod enough length to get me to the deeper waters farther out than the shallows close to the beach?
- would a cheap ambassedeur S round reel that stores ~300 yds of 30lb braid do the trick?

Any other tips and recs more than welcome!

I've been using a BassPro Oceanmaster 11' and Breakwater 12' with Penn Squall 30 (non-levelwind and diy magged).

an Abu 6500 with the levelwind removed might work. the 7000 would hold more line.

practice using the pendulum cast, use a mono shock leader that is twice the length of your rod. its generally recommended to use 10# for every oz of weight.
