Need a single rod for drop shotting and shakey heads. Won't use this for anything else. I only want casting...not spinning. 7ft is ideal. I played with a Champion 702 at Fun/Sun and although it's labeled as Dobyn's go-to for drop shots and shakey heads, the action seemed a little on the lite side. Almost a little too "whispy". I am ok with "whispy" as that's where I'll get the action for the shakey head and drop shots but I'm wondering if moving up one weight class to a 703 would be better?? My typical weight on a drop shot is 1/4oz plus the bait or a 1/8 to 1/4oz on the shakey head plus the bait. Only other rod I would consider is an ALX but I don't see any good casting rods for this....several spinning models but I'm not doing that. Anyone out there have an opinion between the 702 and 703?

If I were using a Champion series, I would use a 703 for the applications you are describing. If you were using a Fury series, I would use a 702. I throw weightless senkos and flukes on the 703 Champion and it works great.

I love the 702 for drop shots and shakey heads! I have caught several 5-7 pounders on that rod and it handles them well

703, that’s what I use for my drop shot, it’s money!

I have an Extreme 742 DX. Bought it used from Lance Vick(or it would have been a Champion or Fury $$$. Assuming the Dobyns weights are similar across the different lines my 742 has a surprising amount of backbone for fighting/moving fish for a casting fairy wand. 🧚‍♂️

I use the 702c and love it. I almost only DS with it. Caught tons of fish biggest about 7lbs and had no problems. Lost about a 10lber last week but the line broke rod did it's job.

Go with the 702. I use three of them for drop shotting.
I use a Sierra 683 for wacky rigging and a Sireea 684 for Tx. rigged flukes. For dropshotting you want the 702. Perfect rod for that technique.

702 champ is a solid choice for what you're describing

I use a 703c champ for weightless flukes and shakey heads, really good for both. I use more of a medium action on my baitcaster drop shot setup.

Thanks everyone for your input. I pulled the trigger on a 703 instead of the 702. Recommendations were pretty evenly split between the two. Between shakey head and DS, I probably shakey head 70% of the time and DS 30% so that's how I made my decision. Feedback had the 702 better for DS and the 703 was a little better for shakey heads. While I wasn't looking for a senko rod, there were several on here that said the 703 would work well so that's an added bonus. There is a 25% sale on all Dobyn's rods at Sportsmans Outfitters so that helped.

I think you made a good call. I have a 702 that's great for drop shot but a little light for most shaky head work. You're going to love it.
