One reason - it appeared to many that he wanted to kill the guy. As a result he created riots, ruined the careers of his fellow officers, and allowed a huge payout by the city. Not smart in any fashion.

Most police are very dedicated and are out to protect the citizens but that is not to deny that there are a few bad apples out there. Police unions have tied the hands of city administrators so that they cannot effectively deal with them. But it is in the interest of the good guys that the bad guys be dealt with firmly. To punish the bad guys is in no way an indication of one not supporting the police. If the evidence supports the prosecutors then Chauvin should be convicted. If not, he should be found not guilty. It seems apparent in the video, but all of the evidence needs to be considered.
