This always start in reverse first, then move into the stages gradually. Also suggest a vacuum to clear the dust as you're working so you can see what's happening as you drill.

Got her done. I had a brand new unopened bit that was very sharp. I used it like a Dremel to wallow the hole out till it fit. Took about 5 minutes.

Thanks.

Use a hole saw bit not a paddle bit. I did this on my boat and it did fine.

I have no problem drilling or cutting holes in someone else's boat if anyone ever needs me.

FWIW: I have seen transducer cables successfully spliced, even though many knowledgeable folks insist that one should never attempt it. For those who absolutely must cut their cable, Airmar sells a junction box specifically manufactured for that purpose. Installation is easy (even I can do it!!) and it works as advertised. It ain’t cheap, but it works.

I realize you have already drilled your hole, I may have to do something similar soon.
My plan is to use a hole saw, after first drilling a hole in some wood scrap.
Then position the wood over the Fiberglas and drill.

I may try the reverse drill to get started.

That’ll look like a beaver chomped hole. Lol.

Just use a step-bit. Buy one that starts out smaller than the current ID and can open the hole to the size needed.

You still have to secure the block of wood to the fiberglass surface. Contact cement will work, just clean it up with paint thinner afterwards. Not acetone.
