My buddies wrote this awesome article, thought I'd share it with you guys! These fish are massively underappreciated and are great sport, I thoroughly recommend giving them a try.

The pursuit of carp angling brings with it several surprises โ€“ primarily large, trophy-class fish caught in your local waters. Captures could range from pristine, richly colored common carp to the elusive, heavy-scaled mirror carp and even wild koi. In some states, however, adventurous anglers could encounter an entirely different species known as the buffalo.

These are not the coarsely coated, plains grazing buffalo you might be imagining, but one of three variants of a native sucker (namely the smallmouth buffalo, black buffalo, or, more rarely, the bigmouth buffalo). While angling techniques for carp align almost seamlessly with catching buffalo, there are a few adjustments the savvy angler can make to target this more subtle-to-bite cousin of carp that experimentation and experience can reveal.

The American Carp Society and its members have a remarkable passion for carp โ€“ that goes without saying โ€“ but we also have a very soft spot for the native buffalo and are just as pleased to catch, care for, appreciate, photograph and release a buffalo as we are a carp.

Throughout this article, you will learn a bit about this often overlooked species and experience the respect and value our members hold for buffalo and understand why they see a bounty of opportunity where otherโ€™s may miss this awarding pursuit entirely.

Love the Buffalo, a favorite. Too bad it does not match the carp in numbers.

That entirely depends on what lake you're fishing!

The only one I've hooked into was such a blast that Ive been doing my best to get another since then! Been taking a second rod to throw dough or range cubes out every time I've gone lately.

I walked Bear creek on Benbrook out toward 1187 last weekend and saw four in the 20 pound class just holding place. Actually kind of a pretty fish.

Belton Lake is full of them. Fish an area that gets deep right off of shore. They are relatively easy to hook not as easy to land. I find that High protein range cubes are best to bring them or keep them in an area. They have to be 25% or higher, doesn't seem to matter what type, I have had good results with cotton seed. The High protein makes them sink. A handful 2 times per week is plenty, don't want to over feed. They will also bring in catfish. Then you fish over the same area with a small hook, I like a number 6 hook with 2 canned sweet corn kernels, the last kernel barely pierced. I also use 12 lb line, I find that higher strength line will rip the hook out of their mouths. I have also used hair rigs again with 2 corn kernels. You will have to fight them in slowly. I typically can catch 4-8 of them in an evening. I have had the line break to only catch the same fish a half hour later with my first hook still in their mouth. They are not very smart, Think like buffalo or cows grazing, as long as there is food they will keep coming back. I don't eat them, but I have given some away to some of my Asian nurses, they seem to Love the things. I have also very seldom used the meat to catch catfish. It is mostly just a blast to catch them.

Possum Kingdom lake has Buffalo. We've caught them up to 60lbs but 15-20 pretty common. Lots of fun. We take a sack of cattle cubes and throw them out a few hours before Fishing and they move in and out.
