I'm going to give you an example of a statistic that purposely doesn't tell you the whole truth, yet looks good on a shiny flier so that most people just briefly look it over and believe whatever the hell it tells them.
And I have to go no further than the image posted to find it:
MLF Toyota series was cut down to 4 divisions this year from 6 divisions last year. You compress the # of anglers in the tournaments and of course the fewer tournaments have more entries. But hey "95% increase in anglers per tournament over last year!"
Extrapolate this to pretty much everything out there. #'s may not be "made up," they just can be cherry picked in any way to support any cause/view.
