Today was the first day I have seen good carp activity on the surface. I ended up with three fish including this 30” common. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2021/03/full-107020-88909-cccf9a03_f414_47f0_8635_a51b76306547.jpeg)

Heck of a nice fish! I'm itching to get back on the flats myself. Tell me about your rod setup.

I caught my first one on a fly yesterday. It hit the fly I was using for sandbass. Great fight on my 5WT.

Heck of a nice fish! I'm itching to get back on the flats myself. Tell me about your rod setup. I have 3 freshwater fly rods I carry most of the time. Two are Browning rods and one is a wright McGill. All are 8’6” graphite 6/7s. I fish for records so I use different line class tippet. I use about 6’ of straight mono leader as tippet. The fly is my carp slayer. One rod is set with sinking line and a sinking version of the fly. A floating fly is matched with a floating WF line. The final rod has a small version of the fly for small carp, catfish, and sunfish. I hope this helps.

My fever builds ... and it's not the virus! I understand. I am ready to go after some fly fishing buffalo records when it warms up a little more, but it is a long grueling process.

Great information. What range of tippet do you utilize? Are they line shy? I usually catch them when I'm fishing with 6 lb. fluorocarbon. They often break me off with that first violent run.
Is that just spun calf hair?
Do you just wrap some lead weight on the hook for the sinking flies?

Do you just wrap some lead weight on the hook for the sinking flies? If I am not after a tippet record, I normally use 20 pound mono. If I am after a tippet record, then it can be from 2 to 30 pound tippet. If you get below 12 pound, you need an area where the fish have room to run. In a couple of the areas I fish it is almost impossible to get a fish to the net with less than 20 pound test. The floating flies are elk or pronghorn. I use moose, deer or elk hair on the sinking flies. To get them to sink, I wrap the hook with brass or copper wire. With a little practice you can get them to sink slowly. The sinking ones are deadly on catfish.
