I got out of bed this morning with no real intensions of going fishing. I had a long list of chores to do around the house and the weather was looking kind of dicey for going out on the lake in a jon boat. i can handle some fairly rough water but my wife said the news said something about possible thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes, solar flares and maybe an asteroid. So, when it comes to lightning, I'm out. The truth is, I just wasn't in the mood to go out in the boat. But after my camp trip with Linecaster and our discussions about our love for Bluegills I decided that, after knocking out a chunk of my list, I deserved a break and know a little creek five miles from my house. Its a small, unassuming slice outside of town but it has some flowing water and fish. including Bass, Bluegills and the occasional small Sand Bass. The Bluegills are hard to catch. Not that they are spooky, wiley or big but, the fact that they are little. Some so little they have a hard time eating a size 14 hairs ear. But what they lack in size they make up for in beauty. The real fun in catching one is just to see what colors its going to show. I do fish for bigger, flashier fish but I'm always drawn back to these little gems of color. Its also low key, relaxing. You don't need big boats, fancy equipment or even a lot of time and money. I can't think of very many things as relaxing as walking a creek, looking at nature, wildlife and lazily casting a small fly for these gorgeous little jewels.

Banker - So looking forward to our trip. I know your not a fly guy but any suggestions on fly patterns i can tie for Rios?

The best I can tell from friends of mine who fly fish for Rios, they use what they call a Briminator and a Rio Getter. Brown/Light Brown seems to be the colors. Hopefully some of the fly fishing anglers who post here will reply and can give you first hand information. Rick aka Catyakker has caught many of Rios using a flyrod and also holds some Rio flyrod records. Jamie aka J-Moe also has caught many of Rios on the fly as well.

Matt Bennett makes a fly he named Rio Getter. It works and pattern is on google.

Capt Mac, X3 on the above patterns. However, I would add tying up some Wacky Worms (my favorite). They're nothing more than a 1 inch or so piece of rubber worm material tied on a size 12 or 14 egg hook in brown and also in pink. I have also done well with Zebra Midges in size 14 when they are guarding there nest. One thing I would add is to go barbless as those suckers are really hard to get the hook out. Sure hope to get to meet you when you come visiting.

One very nice post. The pictures go with the words. I have never fished for Bluegill/Sunfish but enjoy reading all of the post in this section of the forum. The anglers here express themselves in a very relaxing and positive way. I feel that I was there enjoying the time with them as I read their post and see their pictures. Your post has done the same. Doctorxring - your wife would probably go nuts. There are a lot of fossils down there. We have had a couple of floods over the last few years that have really brought them out.
