Trying to figure out if the crappie being measured is a white or black crappie?

Count the dorsal spines. White crappie have 5 or 6; black crappie have 7 or 8.

Male white crappie. White crappie have vertical bars on their sides. Black crappie do not. Males get very dark in the spring during the spawn. Not a for sure thing but usually correct.
