Had tilt problems since I bought this old Triton with the Evinrude 225 so I finally rebuilt the cylinders. My problem is getting all of the air out of the system so it will lift the motor. Been thru the bleed process several times with little response. Tried popping the caps and topping the fluid yesterday and made it worse. Starting over today. Any Ideas?

No one answered my plea so I will update. I no longer think there is excessive air in the system since I have worked on this quite a bit. At this time the trim cylinders will raise the motor but not lower without releasing pressure. The tilt cylinder does not raise the motor but will weakly operate if disconnected from the motor. Research says I may have stuck valves in the valve body. What bothers me is that the system worked fine before I rebuilt it but was leaking and making the fluid nasty. Now with new seals and fluid it wont operate correctly. I will provably have to send this off to 5 star Marine or someone to be fixed. Being a DIY guy I really hate this option. Any experience?

Not knowing your level of skills, my first thought is that you missed something in your rebuild. I would take it back down and make sure everything is as it should be. If it was just leaking down before it should have been just the seals (O rings) on the piston. There should not have been any reason to take the pump apart. As stated you will have to take it apart and see what you missed.

I agree. I pulled it back off the boat and will look at it this weekend before I decide to send it to the repair shop. The rebuild seemed to be pretty simple and straight forward. Maybe the valves clogged in its final moments before it gave up. Last time out it wouldn't raise up when loading it back on the trailer and had to use the manual release to get it up. I'm about ready to send it in to end the pain. I may have to ignore my trust issues when someone else is doing the work.

Sending the unit off to 5 Star Marine in Florida. They are supposed to be the experts in tilt and trim. I don't trust anyone local. I will post the result in a couple of weeks.

Update! It has been just about 2 weeks and my trim unit is being shipped back all fixed with a 2 year warranty. $640 kind of takes my breath away but I worked on it for 2 weeks with poor results before I reached my limit.

For $640 they bored and polished the tilt cylinder, replaced the reservoir, rebuilt the unit, the valve body looks different so they may have replaced it and gave me a 2 year warranty. Today I installed my newly rebuilt trim unit on the boat and it works great ....but..... the electric motor is intermittent?? wasn't before. I will call 5 Star Marine Monday to see if the 2 year warranty covers electrical?? Strange, when it doesn't work I can hear the relays clicking. Can bump the starter and it will start working again. I would really hate to send this all the way back to Fla to change the motor, maybe they will send me one?? Still going crazy.

No warranty on the electric motor since they didn't replace it, ordered a new one. Maybe i'll be ready when the weather clears up.

I went through this last year, took it apart several times before I gave up and sent it out. Worked perfect since repair. Ck my old thread from this time last year. Good luck with yours.
