My son and I had the great pleasure of fishing with Todd Froebe on Lake Palestine on Saturday, March 6.

It was unequivocally one of the most "fun" days of fishing I've had in a long time. My son had an absolute blast, too. This was his 18th birthday present and was a really special day for both of us.

Here's a quick long summary.

Todd had us fishing for pre-spawn fish that were just moving into semi-shallow (10-15 ft) water. These were mostly individual fish that were "roaming" after just moving in from deeper water in the main lake.

Using livescope, Todd would identify fish that were anywhere from 15-40 ft in front of the boat. He had us shooting jigs in front of the boat, allowing them to sink to the correct depth, then retrieve to intercept the roaming fish. Indeed, this was finesse, technical fishing at its finest and he had it dialed in! I'm relatively new to crappie fishing, but have done enough to know that *this* was by far the coolest way of combining livescope with actual fishing skills. If we couldn't shoot the jig the correct distance or on the correct trajectory, and retrieve the jig so that it swam within 1-2 feet of these fish, then we wouldn't have caught anything. Truthfully, if I had been out there with just my Garmin sidescan/downscan sonar, we would have been lucky to catch any fish.

We ended up boating 45. Most were slabs. We had, maybe, 2 or 3 fish under 12", most >14". The largest went 2.38 lbs but we had seven fish over 2 lbs. Todd said it might have been the largest 7 fish stringer he's ever had on Palestine.

Ok, here are some pics. If you can, fish with Todd!
