I have a house on Cedar Creek. I mostly fish for crappie and whites out of the boat but I would like to fish for cats when not out on the lake. My house sits on an opening to a cove that is supposed to be pretty good for catfish.

Can some of you experts give me an idea of what kind of gear I would need to fish from the bank, dock, etc.., maybe send a pic of how you tie your setups, bait choices, techniques, etc.? I really appreciate any help you can give. My daughter loves catching catfish but i only catch them by accident.

I haven't been catfishing in a long time, but I'd surmise most use "his" same gear no matter what, and use whatever knot is your favorite.

As for bait, worms or bloody, stinky stuff, anything gross that will sit on the bottom!

Technique? I'd guess, if the pole doesn't bend, recast or simply real in a bit and drag it to a new spot.

In our cove on Cedar Creek we would just use whatever rod and reels we had for cheap.
Preferably though we would want something like a 7' medium heavy spinning combo.
We use #6 trebble hooks.
I like to use a carolina rig in the day and just a bobber with a hook at night.
You could use a santee cooper rig but I don't care to deal with floats and bobberstops.
Takes to much effort to tie.
For bait honestly anything goes. We use shad if we remember the cast net but we have done well on stink bait, hotdogs, worms, and corn.

Just get a line in the water and be patient. Enjoying the lake and good conversation is half the fun!

I use a 6’6” Ugly Stik rod with a 6500 Abu reel. I slide an 3/4 oz egg sinker with a split shot 18” above a 2/0 to 7/0 hook depending on the size fish I am after. Use cut bait, worms, or punch bait on the hook. Chum with range cubes and you should be able to catch all you want if they are around.

the best luck is setting a line all night. I use ditty poles / also called Diddy poles. I do this on a river usually. Google "Diddy poles ditty poles bank poles" there's a good YouTube video on how to make them.

If your property faces into the wind that’s the best time to catch some catfish. Early morning I would cast net for some shad. Then use a Santee Cooper rig with a circle hook. As far as rod and feel you’ll want something fairly stout and long (if you’re casting for distance). I usually like a snell knot for circle hooks.

If you don’t want to castnet for shad, I’ve used fresh chicken breast and done pretty good as well.

The stick isn’t going to matter. Just keep the drag fairly loose (I’ve caught15 lb catfish on my daughters 3’ long Barbie pole). Get a $30 casting net from Walmart, find an open spot and toss it in. You are looking for medium sized blue Gill. Hook it on a size 3 circle hook ( hook it straight through the upper part of the fish) through the narrow portion. Keep your line taught and wait. If it’s real windy or has a big current, throw a bullet weight on the bottom (smallest you can get away with). Guarantee you come up money. Sometimes stink bait works but it has to be a good one; usually made locally. But not always and man they make your hands smell for a week. Plus with the casting net, worst case scenario at least you caught some perch. And that’s better than a goose egg.
