I've read a few posts on this forum about Lavon already but wanted to see if anyone could further clarify some things. I've recently moved to Fairview and live very close to Brockdale and about 15 minutes from Collin Park. From my understanding, it isn't safe to run north of Collin Park on the west side and north of the power plant on the east side. Is everything else in between safe to run? Getting around on Lavon is my biggest concern at this point.

I also understand that Lavon isn't considered an incredible fishery, that's fine. I'm mainly looking for a lake that I can hit for a few hours after work. That being said, how does it fish? I've heard a lot about fishing the lake's rip-rap but do the fish move offshore at all? There's several marinas so I assume flipping could come into play? Do people fish the standing timber? Any information at all is helpful, thanks.

Lavon is a good lake. There are a lot of 5-10 pound fish in it. Look for rock and you can normally find fish. Not just rip rap either. Also, in the spring, if the water is up, the buck brush is in play. Lots of good fish up shallow. Have fun!

I should have added I agree with the above assessment. It can be tough if the lake is down.

There are rock piles all over the lake. There is brush on just about every ramp on the lake as well. You are liable to get your arm broke fishing the levy at night on a full moon Just saying.
Fish seem to always be on the first break lines.

To answer your first question , yes north of collin there are lot of trees/stumps TAKE IT SLOW. there was a video posted months ago of guy running that area wfo when level was low. He was brave & Crazy lol

I saw this video yesterday! I crossed refenced the video, google maps, and Navionics to try to figure out where the submerged treeline ended. Where do I need to watch out on the east side of the lake?

Lavon can be a challenge but once you kind of understand it it can be really good. If you fish the vegetation you will almost always catch fish. Problem is, you can spend days looking for vegetation, and there might not be any in a given year.

As someone said - rocks - the lake is a shallow clay bowl, very silted in in most places, so not many defined creeks and channels. Rocks are different wo they tend to hold fish.

BTW - you can pretty much run from Brockdale if you stay pretty far west in the arm, and then once to the main lake across and up the east arm until you get north of the power plant. There are a few long points that you have to watch when the water is down.

You can catch them offshore, but mainly on railroad tracks and old roadbeds - check the map - not many of them but the ones there can be productive at times.

Lavon is like any lake, there's a TON of stuff you'll never see with the naked eye unless you've fished it during a severe drought.
I've seen guys run on plane without ever lifting througfh parts of the lake I never would, and I've lived and fished Lavon for 20+ years.
Concrete and rocks, There's an abundance of both but 90% of what you really wanna fish is submerged.

MANY working man night trounaments have been won doing EXACTLY this.

Realize the history of Lavon. It is imponded in the 50's and raised in the 70's.

20 foot difference in original plan vs. now.

Old boat ramps, park structures, lots, and roads to explore. I haven't caught fish on them (yet), so shallow Bowl is the truth.

The lower the water level the better the bite, and vice versa. Also if they’re releasing water thru the dam the bite will usually shut off. You can check to see if they’re letting water out by looking on the COE website. If you just want to catch a couple fish in the occasional afternoon trip just cover water and throw a squarebill.

Gates are open.

Easiest lake in the metroplex to catch a good sack if you can find them. I love to flip and as Tom said, the flooded brush always holds fish, they will be deep in it.

There’s Marinas to fish, tires to flip, a thousand boat ramps that all have rock extending 10-12’ feet on each side, standing timber, rip rap, hot water dishcharge, fresh water intake, rock piles, brush piles, vehicles, boats, a body or two I’m sure. So, for a mud hole, there’s plenty of stuff to fish.

Btw, I zero’d there on Sunday, lol!
