So is there any truth to people getting an email from Griddy telling them to switch to a fixed rate provider before the storm hit? I saw a couple people on some news threads saying that they received one but many others said they did not. Yes. I don’t use Griddy, but my provider sent me an email offering a voucher if I switched to my provider of last resort (TXU). Mine asked me because I’m on a fixed rate plan and they said their a small business and were struggling. I didn’t switch. I use Energy Ogre to find me the best rates, and they’re great. I’m sure many providers sent similar emails, including Griddy. Wait - they actually requested that you change to the POLR prior to the storm? Because they were a small business and they'd rather you pay the $90/KW rate than cost them any money? Yes. Someone else here got the same email I did and started a thread about it. To be clear, it wasn’t Energy Ogre. It was the actual provider.

It is well worth the $120.00 a year I pay them to keep me ahead of the game. I was with one company and when the contract ended my next bill almost doubled! I called their retention department and the offer wasn't even in the ballpark!

I don’t understand, people sign a contract to get the cheapest rate possible but then in return your variable rate spikes in times the grid is struggling. But they don’t want to pay or feel like they are responsible for the bill? Opportunity cost, usually comes with risk.

What’s the difference between powertochoose.org and energy ogre? Energy ogre makes you pay a yearly subscription. Exactly and for something that is easy to do on your own. People in the city of Fate have formed a little power group. They send me emails every year and claim savings. I can always beat them on Power to Chose just like I easil beat Energy Ogre. When I heard about the Griddy emails I checked rates. They were up significantly and there were a limited number of plans available in my area. Rates are back down now and plans have tripled.

That didn't take long.
Does this mean that the Griddy customers don't have to pay? The payment was automatically withdrawn from some of their accounts. Hope they get some compassion from the state. The feds shouldn't have to cover this. You mean the consumers that used the electricity shouldn't have to pay, but the taxpayers that are responsible should?

Freedom to fail is lost on many people, don't worry a democrat will bail them out.

Everyone that chose to pick a market based rate REP as their provided knew ahead of times how it works. The price changes all the time and they are notified ahead of time when to expect these spikes. Most of the time it doesn't reach the Max (9.00 KWH) but it does spike often. Nothing new to them, not sure why some got caught. Even if you couldn't switch REPS you should have turned everything off until after the spike. By Friday they were back paying about 1.5 cents per kwh.

How do you know you beat Energy Ogre if you are not signed up? I have checked their rates and neighbor is on them. Plus they charge $10 per month for their service. I am not willing to pay $120/year for something that might take me 10 minutes to do myself. Ogre has a cost and not for everyone. I equate it to people that pay for a tax service when they have a simple tax return. I have to add that for someone that averages 1500 kwh/month Ogre makes less sense then someone that uses 3000.

Or did they past on the cost of energy to the consumer as they agreed in the contract? If they price gouged I agree with you.

Creating a low supply to create a false demand during a natural disaster. If it is not price gouging, it is anti trust

I tried energy ogre for a year and they literally signed me up for the top choice that power to choose recommended at the time. I paid an additional $120 for that.
