I made another trip to the steps yesterday. Arrived later in the morning than planned. Water was pretty clear so I had to find some deeper water to fish and the bite was on. I limited out in four hours, it took longer to get a limit this time because I was culling fish, if they were under eleven inches I threw them back. Then a period of time had come where you couldn't buy a bite and I was like, dang, maybe I should have kept those legal smaller fish after all. But it all worked out, yeah I had to fish longer to accomplish a limit, but at least I took home the bigger fish. I probably caught somewhere around fifty fish yesterday, I kept tossing the smaller ones back. When I cleaned these fish I noticed almost everyone of them were males. Out of all the fish I caught before I only had three males out of seventy five fish. So you might say the males finally made it upstream. Here's my take on this, (the females look like they are ready to pop), (the males just arrived in big numbers), ( as soon as the water temps rise, the fish will spawn out quickly.) With that said, as soon as the females spawn out they will turn around and haul tail back to the lake, that's what they do. So this could be the shortest time frame to catch spawning whites we have ever seen before. Most of the time you can start catching these fish in early Jan, but this year no one was catching them until late Feb. early March. Oh well, just my idea on what might happen, heck maybe this year they will spawn all the way through April.

I had several people fishing across the river say, man, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of bait are you using? And I tell them what it is. The truth is, it is all about presentation more than the bait. You have to trick these fish into striking your bait. This stands true to all artificial baits. You just got a know what to throw at different species or what works best for yourself. I call these my confident baits, you know the ones I can get some decent results from.

Had a pretty good afternoon on Willis creek Friday. Found (saw) the whitebass pretty quickly but not much bit until after about 4PM. Started slow then peaked around 5:30. I didn't "load the boat" but the dozen or so I did catch were worth the 4 hour round trip from Bryan. J-Moe even caught a few..

Great video, Ben! Really enjoyed the pointers for stalking fish in clear shallow water.

Friday was horrible fishing as the pressure was changing. From sun up to sun down they just did not bite. Went back Saturday and the bite was going again. I kept 17 nice 12 to 14 inch fish and tossed somewhere between 20 to 30 smaller ones back. The fish are up in the creek and river, catching them on a good day is something else though.

Been out a few times this year with only one fish to show for it. Drove out to Newman's Bottom yesterday and got skunked. It's been a struggle, trips either getting rained out or snowed out. I could use a good outing for sure.

Fished Willis Creek this afternoon. Only caught two White Bass, but had an otter swim by me while I was fishing. It was only about seven or eight feet away and even snorted at me. Guess I was in his territory. Pretty cool. 😎

With warm nights and higher day temperatures the white bass bite should pick up. I am taking a few days off, but should be back out there either Wednesday or Thursday. I am in recuperate mode for now, my lower back has been giving me fits, so I had to slow down some. But I can't wait to get back and catch some more. I may also be through keeping fish, I have pretty much filled my freezer. One more limit would be awesome though, I still have room for one more.

The steps has really slowed down. You have be there at the right time when the bite picks up and it may not last long. Sure you will see someone catch one here and there, but it is not anything like it was last week. Seems like from the talk from anglers the bite has been good right at day break and late in the afternoon right before sun set. But you have to be in the right places to get these bites and it is in the shallow water.as they start moving around and coming up from the deeper holes. I went yesterday, Thursday for an hour and only caught one fish, missed several. As the water continues to warm up these fish are going more into the spawn mode, so you will see them in shallow water darting around as the males are chasing the females. It is far from being over but it is a hit or miss deal right now. Two best times are early morning and late afternoon in shallow moving water. Maybe we will receive enough rain this coming weekend to pull more fish from the lake up into the river, or even better than that, maybe enough run off to get fish up into the Yegua creek. The rains need to come soon as time is running out on this years spawn.
