when I was in college , we caught a lot of green sunfish in Western Oklahoma stock ponds and soil conservations lakes.
I live on Lake Palestine , but I don't recall ever catching one off my dock.
does anyone here target them ? what water bodies in East Texas hold good populations. I would for my grandson to
catch some of these.

Have not fished often in East Texas. I have a friend that lives near Tyler and he has caught some nice Greens at Tyler State Park fishing the lake inside the park. He also caught some nice Bluegill there. He sent me some pictures last year. The Greens were good size fat 8 to 9 inches in length. I usually catch most of my Green Sunfish out of creeks during late spring till about late October ! thumb

Check with the state biologist that manages that lake. He or she will be able to give you an idea on the population and size based on their fish shocking survey data. They will also be able to give you a general location and depth of the areas of the lake they served.

We use the Green for catfish bait in the rivers . We usually trap them in small ponds .

never caught a lot of green sunfish, might occasionally catch bluegill (oftentimes skinny) as bycatch on the main lakes but then again never targetted them. When I was in middle school and high school I used to catch them consistently in the creeks though.

I catch most of my big green sunfish off of rip rap in June or July. My wife seems to find really big ones in the spring and holds a couple of waterbody records for them. I use a fly rod to catch really small ones right along the shoreline, especially were it is rocky. I have caught some nice ones on lures.

Hope you find some. These guys in the Bluegill section seem to catch a lot of them throughout the year. I have seen some "TANKS" posted here!

I've caught green sunfish in creeks on foam spiders on every cast until the spider fell apart. But I can't say I've ever caught one in a lake. Maybe they're in shallow and weedy parts?

In college I had a girlfriend that went to east texas state in commerce. Her father and I became fishing buddies and he had permission to fish lots of stock ponds in the area. Everyone of them was loaded with greens. I caught many huge greens on everything from bass lures to nightcrawlers and minnows. One day a rancher came by, saw me drowning some minnows and said "new pond, there ain't no fish in that one yet", before i could answer a massive green well over a pound smashed my minnow, the rancher said "well I'll be damned, how did that get in there"? i said i don't know but thats about the 10th one that size ive caught this morning. Crappie jigheads and half a nightcrawler where especially deadly and caught me hundreds of those things. Ask some land owners to fish their tanks and you will find all the greens you could ever want to catch.
