Nice! There is a guy here that has an owl nest. It's not a box type, just an open nest. He put a live camera on them a couple years ago and streams it on FB. They are cool to watch. The female is sitting on eggs now.

Yes, pilot holes would have been a good idea; but I was doing it for free99 as quickly as possible with a found abandoned pallet. I added some wood glue today with pine bedding to reinforce the laminate cracks, and a tree branch (pilot holes used for screwing on branch)

If you have FB here is a link to the owl cam someone has setup here. This is the 3rd or 4th year a pair has raised young in this nest. https://m.facebook.com/ennisowlcam/

That'll bring out more hooters than a bottle of Boone's Farm at spring break.

Hahaha!
The YouTube experts on owl boxes (they happen to be mostly Brits) recommend 12ft high in a tree Face the opening in the direction of the least prevalent wind (in this part of Texas that would be opening facing west)
They recommend choosing a tree in a good flight pathโthereโs an opening lane in the forest to the tree.

Technically, the owl box I made is a tad short. The experts recommend a minimum of 5ft from the floor of the owl box to the openingโthat way the owls are more mature with better flight abilities before they can reach the opening.
The Brits tend to use a minimum of two people when placing an owl box and they like to use a pulley system to hoist it up 12ft high.
The pallet owl box I made weighs about 40lbs and would not recommend climbing a ladder with it.
