hop, you made it worse!
You're correct there is no suicide cord. But, unless there is some type of safety interlock or lockout, that male plug could be energized while the power company grid is energizing the box. If that's the case, any curious person who walks by, lifts the flap, and touches a lug better hope he doesn't touch a hot leg. I wouldn't want to be "that" homeowner.
No licensed electrician will be willing to install that without a safety interlock or transfer switch installation also - and for very good reasons. No homeower should EVER do this without doing the same. That plug wired to a home's electrical system without proper precautions has the potential to kill - 24/7.

IT IS NOT ATTACHED TO THE GRID, reread my post, I said to a 4 way box inside for extension cords or have an electrician wire in a interlock box to your breakers.

Got it - we had been mixing up solutions that did and did not attach to the existing electrical.

I’m curious, what breaker do you actually have it wired to in your main panel?

I added a 30 amp double pole breaker to the panel, the 30 amp receptacle i plug the generator into is hooked to this breaker. As stated above, there is potential risk with this setup. The risk can be
eliminated if a proper procedure is used.

ekhunter, some may not be as astute as you are about power dangers, so you really should point out this system (while it does absolutely work) can be extremely deadly to those not accustomed to dealing with electricity. It requires a male-to-male connection cable. When that cable is plugged into either end, the other end may be energized. Many may not "get this" as naturally as others do. Additionally, I don't recall if you've mentioned how critical it is for the panel's MAIN breaker be turned off. Otherwise, the generator can backfeed into the grid and kill line workers - it has happened.

My grandpa said male to male connections are potentially dangerous.

If you don’t mind figuring out the load you can draw put in an interlock. With a portable 8000W generator I had power to my gas furnace, fridge, well and lights. It also let me power to the garage to power the door back down. If you are on electric heat you’ll have to use a small electric (be careful it’s away from anything flammable) or get a big generator. If figuring out what to run worries you, color code them on the box with stickers like I do for the family or buy a transfer switch that runs only the basics.
