Everyone is talking about how this cold snap most likely got a hold of the coastal fishery. I'm concerned about that too but also wondering what it did to the rio population.

This past week of freezing temperatures in the teens and single digits is going to take it's toll on the Rio population in Texas. I would say anywhere between half and three quarters of the population will die off. The Comal River is the only exception. Water in that river stays 72 degrees year around. There has not been this type of freezing weather here in central, southcentral, hill country, and southwest Texas in years. We have had very mild winters over the past several years and the Rio populations multiplied. They also stayed strong. I caught plenty of Giant Rios last year and the years prior. This is Gods way of making room for stronger, bigger Rios to come. I think Rios will be hard to find this year in my opinion. On the brighter side I could be wrong. Hopefully only one week of very freezing weather did not take such a server toll on the Rio's and that there will be a descent population of Rios this year in the hill country, central, south central, and south Texas. We shall see. Rios are very easy to spot from mid spring through late fall. Especially during the spring when they are on nest guarding their young. thumb

I think you are right Chuck. I sure hope the die off will be minimal. I think the Rios in water bodies with good strong currents and thick grass beds will have a better chance of survival. Lets hope for a descent Rio year ! noidea

I was just thinking of the fish in Brushy Creek the northern most Rio population I know of. Brushy has many springs but runs very cool even in the heat of summer.

For what I have been reading about Rios all on this forum, they are a warm water fish and thrive in warm clear water with a good flow and current. It would be hard not to imagine some sort of a Rio fish kill. Let's just hope it is minimal.

It got down to a low of 6° here on the ranch. I went and checked some of the rio holes here and didn't see any dead fish of any kind banana all of the holes here are spring fed so the water temp stays pretty much the same year round

Chuck, I remember you telling me that you thought the giants were probably 3rd or 4th generation rios. I can only imagine what this year will bring. World record rio from the west prong???

Somewhere on that river there is a Rio over 2 lbs. Lets hope the freezing weather did not take it's deadly toll. violin

Side Note: Keep an eye open for them. If you ever catch one of those TANKS call me. I will be there in a few short hours with scale! cheers

Seems to me if the river as springs to control it's temperature the Rios there would have a pretty good chance for survival. Kind of like the Comal River.

Im pretty sure there will be a significant Rio kill but not devastating. It seems there was plenty of rain and the water levels in most of the rivers and creeks where Rios call home was plenty high enough and fairly stable to make for the deeper holes in time. Where there are no "deep" holes or deeper access for the Rios, you will see a fairly significant kill. Think shallower long creeks and oxbows where the water has been cut off from the channel for some reason. It really depends on whether the water body had significant level and deeper holes before the Big Chill. I think there may be slightly less catches even though the numbers of actual fish will be less. Hunger and relatively more forage in the systems will make the remaining predator species show themselves more and more.
