I looks like the topic is Threadfin, but what will happen to the Gizzard Shad? I have caught some really big ones in my cast nets and wonder if it will be the young or the old that will die.

gizzard shad are more hearty than threadfins but still not anywhere near as commercial minnows.

Back in my striper fishing days on Texoma condition warmer than this led to some major shad kills. I would be shocked if we don't see major kills on almost all of our lakes. I'm hearing water temps of low 30's on many lakes. Threadfin aren't designed for that. Most of the gizzard shad should be fine, but there will be a few dead ones in the mix. The other side to the story is it's amazing how fast the threadfin population can recover. By next fall you will likely see huge threadfin populations again.

Dunlap (RIP) had clouds of shad everywhere on the lake and still kicked out more and bigger bass than Canyon. Literally all a bass would have to do is swim with it's mouth open through a school of shad. I don't see how that could be a bad thing for their health.

About 10 years ago and 20 years ago on Texoma there were major shad kills. In fact, they had to restock shad it was so bad. Stripers were so skinny. Maybe some of the deep ones will survive but I doubt it.

From a fishing view point, both recreationally and commercially, that was one of the most devastating effects of the huge arctic blast Texas experienced in 1983. It totally decimated the fish that were in the shallow intercostal areas especially the Laguna Madre. Redfish were nearly wiped out. One of the success stories of the TPWD was the restocking program, limits and constant monitoring that took many, many years to replenish the redfish population. As catastrophic as this cold front as been it would have to last twice as long as it has to equal the devastation back in 1983. Just got out of high school and working through college outside in construction. Wonder why I can still remember? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️🤪

And then there's the Tilapia that will have some die off. Happened down at Amistad some years ago it was awesome big bass blowing them up as they were dying...killer swimbait action we were free falling it and the bass would jerk the rod out of your hand practically.
