Anybody have recent temps on Rayburn?
Curious how much it will drop from this weekend until next weekend

In the early 80’s N. TX had the coldest winter in decades. I think it was ‘83. Was already cold and there was a week like we’re forecasting to have in the coming days. There was areas of Ray Hubbard that had ice extending out pretty far from shore especially by rip rap. I don’t know what surface temps were but would have to think high 30’s are possible as some have said they have seen 1st hand. It was Dec 1983 and it didn't rise above freezing for 2 solid weeks. It was the first time I have ever seen Ray Hubbard frozen north of Hwy 66. I remember this very well even though I was only 5-6 years old at the time. I remember Dad taking me, my brother, and some of our friends to the Chaha boat ramp and it was frozen as far as the eye could see from there which would be between I-30 and what is now 190. The ice was so thick we couldnt break through it even with some of the big rocks there by the ramp at the time. At the time they had a pretty long wood pier that went out there and even at the very end of that pier the ice was so thick we couldnt break it. Good chance I was standing on the bank watching you guys that day. I remember it well.

I was in Kansas the winter of 82 {Dec-Jan} working bird dogs an had several days of -14.. I would think you had some pretty nasty days here too.

Behind the RR bridge on Monticello halfway back into Blundell was frozen over too!! ...and you can probably recall seeing those stacks running on full power. Yes '83 was the longest stretch of sub-freezing weather in North Texas and this current round will probably be the second longest. Will be interesting to see how much the spawn gets delayed or extended this spring.

The other thing we will likely see, especially in the DFW north lakes, is some level of threadfin shad die off. You get 40 or below and its pretty much a guarantee. I've got no real knowledge on the Florida strain bass other than catching them in Florida. Does the Florida strain have the where with all to survive if they're subjected to long periods of cold water (40* or below)???... Dan

Dan I don't know how long they can survive in sub-40 degree water since I am not a biologist but I will say this. I've caught them in 40 degree water and I've caught them in 102 degree water at Monticello in the summer. However, that was what my surface temp was showing. That's why i started the other thread asking if anyone had ever checked temps at 5' increments down to 30 feet. The last 4 days in NTX it has been crazy cold and some of the smaller lakes are beginning to freeze over. That tells me the surface temp on those lakes has to be 30-32 but I am sure it is not that cold 10' down.

The northern most lakes that I know for sure that stock Florida's is Chickamauga. I've heard Kentucky lake also but I'm not positive. I've got a house on Norris Lake and I know the water temp there is 40*- 42* so Chick can't be that drastically different...Dan

I think the bass will survive. We have had 39-40 degree water in past years.

The weathermen have underestimated over and over how cold this airmass is, sometimes by 10 degrees for the day. I think if skies stay clear we are headed below zero tonight. We may be on our way to all-time record cold East Texas water temperatures by the time Friday morning gets here.

7 degrees at my house in Austin at 5 am this morning. Power out since 2:52 am. 5" on snow. Water temps on Travis... I AIN'T EVEN THINKING ABOUT FINDING OUT!!
