All three of my pumps are running in freeze protection mode. I'm wondering if I should run the pool heater given just how cold it is. I guess my main fear is power outages. Seems like if I have a little extra heat in the pool it will do better if we have extended power outages. Thoughts? Run the heater or just a waste of money?

Ran it last night Did a little good, but pool surface still froze over. Water is still running though.

If the power goes out, that little bit of heat will be gone in a hurry. Best thing to do would be trip the breakers and pull all the freeze plugs until the temps get above freezing.
if it is within my reach, I'm going to pet it.

If you have any extra salt or can get some load the pool up with the salt.

Lost power at 345. My pool has ice on it now. Turned my breaker off so I can check for frozen pipes once it thaws out.

hot water freezes faster than cold.
leave them in freeze protection is probably the best bet.

My pool service guy says not to. Produces acidic sweat that can damage parts.

Any ideas what to do as far as warming pump and pipes up once we get electricity?

-2 here in Lubbock. My pool has weathered multiple cold events. Just keep the pumps running and you will be fine. I also make a small tent over my pump and valve lines when it gets this cold, but I am not sure it is necessary. As long as you are moving water, you should be fine. If your power goes out, I suspect that you are in a bit of trouble.

I covered my pump with moving blankets, put a tarp on top of that and put a heat lamp under it. Everything is still working, but the top of pool had a layer of ice on top that I just went out and broke up with a shovel.

Down South here in League City we are not going to get as cold are you guys in the North and West part of the state. I have all three of my pumps running. I think we are about 18 degrees, once it clears up tonight it will be a little colder more than likley.
I put shipping blankets over my pumps and my filter. I am more concerned about loose power. We are good so far.
My pool heater is broke, I need to get a new controller card for it, dang they are expensive.
Swimming pools and cold weather don't exactly mix.
Thanks, Billy
