I bought a HDS9 to put on my bow and going to put it on an active target. Do I need to run a transducer also and if so what one.

I assume you bought the LIVE or Carbon HDS. For a long time, I ran the HDI transducer as it provides sonar and downscan. The HDI is a easy to install on Trolling Motor. Will need HDI ducer, $20 mounting kit (for trolling motor) and $30 7 to 9 pin adapter (unless your HDS is a Carbon). The HDI will plug into channel-1 (blue connector).
