I was pullin your chain Tim. I don’t golf. Never have. I thought about it a few times 25-30 yrs ago but then I came to my senses and went catfishing. If I got 5 hrs to burn you can bet the house where I will be...

At what temperature can we expect a shad kill?

The Shad kill is hard to predict but it usually happens with a prolonged fast cooling of the water and the water temp is around 40. I think this dramatic cold with strong wind will probably be enough...

Chris, is there an element of depth of water in the equation? I have always thought if the water was deep enough, they could take refuge there. I don't know what depth that is. Lavon is relatively shallow. I think there are a few spots that get to 50 feet. Time will tell if that's deep enough.

It happens up shallow first Tim. There are tons of bait that are smart enough to go deep before they get killed but if we stay cold long enough even the Shad that go deep are in jeopardy. I’ve fished around the Shad kill a handful of times over the years and it’s usually very slow. When you hang one it’s stuffed to the max with 2-3 inch threads. I’ve only fished the kill 1 trip and done real good and that trip we fished the deepest hole in the lake the morning of the kill was happening out deep in 60+ ft and we hammered em like no other. I’m far from being an expert and can only tell ya what I’ve seen as a weekend fisherman over the past 20 yrs or so. Shad kill can mean mammoth sized overstuffed fish but they can be hard to catch in my experience. It’s fishing so if your in the right place at the right time it is epic. I’m going as soon as it warms up enough to take my son regardless of a Shad kill or not. FYI amigos, lots of lake records are broken during the Shad kill....
