I’m looking at a used boat that has a 250hp evinrude motor with 16 hours on the new power head. All I’ve heard are bad things about Evinrude but that’s through a couple friends. Wanted to reach out and here yalls thoughts?

Going on my 4th season with mine and zero issues. Still have 6 more years of warranty so not worried at all.

My G2 is an incredible motor so far. 2017 model.
I don’t know many people that have had a problem with the G2 models.

I read on here all the time about warnings not to buy them because of warranty but so have not had any problems getting mine warranties.
I have had 3 Yamahas blow up at about 350 hours so I think this Evinrude is great.
I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another, I actually have been considering trading mine for new one a dealer still has.

I ran an 07 ETEC for 7 years on my Legend and it was virtually trouble free. Hardly used oil, great fuel mileage and ran like a scalded cat.

Evinrudes were great motors and had their issues from time to time like all motor companies have had or do have. Ran two Evinrudes for 30 years on the same hull. Got 15 years out of each. Had to repower after blowing the first one and put on another one. Second one was still on the boat when I sold it this past summer. Issue started being finding anyone who would work on it versus it not being reliable. You will need a mechanic at some point no matter how good the motor is. If you have one or the motor is solid and boat meets your current needs/budget pull the trigger and go fish. You can always repower, if the hull is solid, after a few or more years to four stroke or whatever new tech is out then or buy new/another.

Similar as me, 06 on my Cat and still running strong. Just sips oil, I use about a jug and a half a year. A little cold blooded at first, but after its warm she is good for the day.

What about getting parts? Is it difficult?

I have owned 2 Evinrudes over the course of 30 years and have always liked them. My current motor is a 150 HP, 2009 E-Tec that has been an awesome motor. I don't put a lot of hours on it as I mainly fish smaller lakes in Iowa; but, it has never failed me.

BRP/ Evinrude didn't leave the bass boat space, they just left the combustion engine space. They are launching a fully electric line of boats soon.

I had a 05’ 225 Etec that had 1200 documented hours before it dropped a cylinder. It ran great. Instead of rebuilding I put an 15’ 250 Etec on the boat. I loved the motor so much I transferred it to the 17’ BassCat Puma that I own now. Knock on wood zero issues but I am religious about my maintenance. I also have a great marine company that I deal with.

Try to find someone who will do work on it. If you can't, run.

They have said they will support the motor for several years but depending on the area you may have a hard time finding someone who will work on it.

If I was worried about the engine, but really liked the boat I would see if you can purchase a warranty for the motor. Probably just a 2 or 3 year warranty to give you some piece of mind. I'm certain someone is making parts for them. There's too many of them out there for parts not to be somewhat readily available. Just my thoughts.

BRP is no longer offering extended service (warranty) contracts. Whatever warranty is left on the motor can be transferred and honored.
