i wouldnt trust the hour meter on a used boat. you can unplug them easily then plug back in when time to sell. i would highly recommend a compression test done by a certified master mechanic before purchasing.

Since May 6, 2020 I have went from 395hr to 620hr on a 2017 FX21 with 250 SHO. Always has 100hr maintenance done as well as just got 300hr done at 550hrs. Never had a problem with it, using it 3-4 days a week on average.

Most all outboards made in the last 20 years or so store the run time in the ecm and cant be modified.

My center console is a 2012 I bought in 2017. Had 32 hours on it. As it only has a 150hp I drive it hard all the time and have never had a single thing go wrong except for a power steering leak which I wouldn't put as an engine issue. So it depends I suppose. I'm hardly ever under 5000rpms unless I'm trolling around graphing. But spot to spot I have to get to 5000rpms just to get above 40mph. Engine doesn't seem to care at all. Yama 4 stroke is a good engine.

That’s good and bad. I had to spend a few hundred fixing fuel related stuff. I’m still chasing a small fuel gremlin. The boat looked showroom new when I bought it and has cost me a couple thousand in repairing seats and now carpet due to accelerated wear.

I’d recommend buying a newer boat, that has logged more hours, than a boat that sat for 15 yrs... it costs about the same.

cheers

my motor has a manufacture date of 02/2010 and it has 951 hours on it.

but 60% of them are low RPMs and I'm over the top about maintaining my equipment

Is it a 4 stroke? If so and it has been maintained, some last thousands of hours.

According to the Yamaha dealer techs that I have been around the last few years, the absolute worst thing you can do to a Yamaha SHO is spend extended time idling at low rpm's. To the point that I had one dealer tell me Yamaha would deny warranty if the idle hours got to high. I have since been told by one of the regional reps that this is completely false. I do lots of offshore fishing so if a boat can't have idle time, it is absolutely worthless to me. Just be aware that high idle time is often sold as a positive when in reality it may be a negative on these newer 4 strokes. All of these relatively new motors can be hooked up to a computer and give you all kinds of data. I would definitely go get that done before you buy a boat.

With all that said my SHO has 500 hours on it now with relatively few problems. From the saltwater guys that run them every day most seem to get about 1000-1200 hours out of an SHO before some major issues pop up. The old grey f series Yamaha can easily get 1500-2000 hours when maintained properly and used regularly. Thus the reason you see very few SHO's in saltwater anymore.

I can't speak to Mercury longevity because I have not owned one in over 20 years.

The deal with 4 strokes (just my opinion) idle hours are not harmful, but you need to air it out frequently. Get some heat in the motor and let her run hard for a bit. Worst thing on a high output 4 stroke motor is the 3500-4500 rpm "lugger" guy.

One thing I always do is warm my motor up and warm it up by idling in gear not just at the ramp. Even if in a tournament and I need to go, I do not crank it up cold and hammer down on it. I was told this when I was very young and I've always done it. Also my boats have always been serviced at 50-75 hours. May be overkill, but it's just somethings I've always done.

High hours and condition of a motor are different on every boat.

Like I said earlier, if you find a good boat with good accessories and electronics, you can get a good deal if it's higher hours and especially if it's been taken care of and ran appropriately.

I've got over 800 on my Pro XS 2 stroke, and it's still very dependable and strong. Good fuel, and ethanol additive and they will go a long way. On these optimax's the compressor seems to last somewhere between 450 and 600 hrs. Otherwise the best thing to do is use them.

I like to burn straight gas in my 2011 Yamaha 225 hp sho and 1994 Mercery 225hp 2 stroke. I think long term use of ethanol is hard on engine parts. I understand if it’s not available you don’t have an option. It seems to me that ethanol is very hard on fuel systems. If you could find an owner that has been burning straight gas in a used boat that would be worth looking into. Straight gas is sold in many places in Texas. Where I buy fuel the cost is the same as premium fuel. Got to be a bunch of boats out there running on straight gas. All of my equipment is run on straight gas.
