So I have the opportunity to buy a Capri camper for my truck, but it is an 8' and I only have a short bed.

So my question is, has anyone ever towed their boat with a hitch extension? The one I'm looking at is 18".

For reference:

not a good idea imo.

I think it would be safer to have the trailer tongue extended if it is only 18", cut out old and replace with a single square tube with the extra length.

put a backup camera on the license plate so you can see to back it.

It just not that much weight. I wouldn't be scared to try it.

I had a Lance truck camper. Installed a Class V hitch and used a 36โ€ extension. No problems.

When these get into trouble isn't just about the weight. The leverage factor and resulting torque on the components can get into the trouble zone. The longer you make a tube extension, the more stress you put on the connection point. Even without a heavy trailered load, it's possible the leverage can twist the receiver right out of the frame of the tow vehicle. That connection point was designed for the hitch ball to be mere inches away; turn that into 3 feet, and the design can be pushed to a point of failure. While this probably won't happen when happily chugging down the highway, you don't really want a hitch connection twisting to failure if you have to leave the paved road to avoid a collision, etc.
