A female Cooper's , with enough prey can live up to ten years. Most commonly live one to two . Fantastic birds of prey. Great photo.

I have one that swoops down on the finches at my feeders every once in a while.

A Cooper's Hawk can eat an amount of food equivalent to 12% of its body weight in one day. This is similar to a 120-pound person eating 14 pounds of food .

Hawks often have less of a need for water because they drink the blood of their prey .

The raptors then often consumes victims while they are still alive, so long as they do not protest too vigorously — the prey eventually succumbs to massive blood loss or organ failure, incurred during dismemberment.

This thread came up at the right time, standing at my computer reading todays updates, a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk hits our kitchen window. It was after one of the small birds on the feeders. Wish I would've had my SD card in my camera, it set there dazed for a few seconds, then flew away.

medium size birds are a top prey item

Coopers Hawk can and do kill doves, so it's not just the small birds that need be concerned.

I have Purple Martins and will usually loose 10 Martins to Cooper's Hawks each year.

Other raptors this size are Sharp Shin Hawks and Merlins are in this group.

Merlin is the fastest and most deadly but usually catches small song birds in mid air at about 40mph.

Just a puff of feathers appear when he crosses the back yard.
