Also having new reeds installed as a precaution (the 200's came with steel reeds that will likely kill the engine when they fail). That 250 you're looking at has carbon fiber reeds already so no need in messing with them till one breaks (they won't hurt the engine when they break, just makes it run weaker).

Like the other said, verify compression test and buy with confidence.

The comment about reeds in the 200's made me curious. I re-powered with a 200 Pro XS in April of 2017.

I checked with Joe in Hallsville, TX - he did the re-power for me. Per Joe: All 200 Pro XS from serial number 1b912786 and newer (which yours is ) have carbon fiber reeds below that number are steel

Several good points here. I have an 08, and it has over 750 hrs. and is still very reliable and strong. There are some things to check. Compression, but if it has compressions problems it will be evident in how it runs. These motors are prone to wearing the lower motor mount plate, especially if run high on a jackplate in rough water. Easy enough to check, with the motor tilted ~ 2/3 up, pick-up on the lower unit, and see if there is slop in the pivot bracket. It's a repair that takes removing the powerhead, and runs ~ $1,200.00. The lower unit needs to be checked for metal in the oil. Some is normal, too much indicates problems. The compressors seem to last somewhere between 450 and 600 hrs. They are a little pricy, but fairly easy to replace. Mine had a complete powerhead replaced at ~ 200 hrs. by the previous owner, but it was covered by Mercury for some reason. I'm sure it will start howling on TFF, but I always run premium fuel - maybe it helps, maybe I'm wasting money, but my results stand on their own. I also only run Mercury Premium Plus oil. Good motor - enjoy it.

Why do they require yearly service ? I change my lower unit oil every year and that's it , runs great with fuel additive and seafoam a couple times a year .

No worries ...get compression check done, but those hrs are low...still many hours of service left
