I had a Nissan Sentra with the CVT transmission for commuting. Traded it in with 185,000 miles on it and never had a mechanical issue.

I've had two. An Audi and a Dodge something or other. They're pretty neat.

Continuously Variable Transmission, they've come a long way, used to be a rubber-band driven transmission, now kevlar reinforced belts.

Continuously Variable Transmission. Basically there is a series of belts in the transmission that take over the load as the gears shift. When driving, you never feel the gear shift - it keeps a constant load on the engine.
The wife had a Nissan Murano around '07. Drove it for maybe 4 years 65K miles with no transmission problems. We had plenty of other problems with that car, but never an issue with the CVT.

Some companies produce very reliable CVT automobiles (Subaru) Others, no.

Couple years ago we rented a Honda accord with the CVT. It was smooth as glass Without any shift point feeling. I don’t know what the longevity of a CVT is but I’m guessing should last awhile.

We’ve had 2 now. First was wife’s Subaru Outback, now her new Honda CR-V. No probs so far but like you, I was concerned at first. I still don’t like the way you can’t feel the shift of the the cvt. To me it’s like riding a bike in a gear higher than you should be in, lugging the engine. When we got the outback in 2014 or 2015?, I found out these trannys can’t be rebuilt and a new one ain’t cheap, may be different now. Probably fine and my wife likes them, but not for me in a vehicle I’ll drive.

You gotta admit...that’s brilliant on her part.
