What do you guys use to measure surface temps?

I fish a bunch of random ponds, but always quick 30-minute to 2-hour outings. Without much time to dial in on any sort of pattern, I am thinking being able to get the surface temp will help key in on at least where to start. Especially with all this weird weather/rain and being on such small bodies of water, I know things are changing fast but I don't have a clue in which direction and what's going on from day to day.

Was thinking about this after reading a bunch of positive reviews. Anyone tried infrared thermometers?

I have one I use for the smoker, never though of using it on the water, my graph has temp.
I don't bank fish often.

Back when I was a lifeguard, we used one of those laser thermometers to read the surface temp of our pools. Its not perfect but it was usually pretty close (+/- 2 degrees). Im sure itd be good enough for fishing too if you just want a quick approximation. Management did buy one that wouldnt read the water though so maybe certain brands don't work or we had a faulty model.

The laser thermometer I have in my kitchen has very inconsistent readings on water. Works just fine on opaque things, like for tempering chocolate. You should probably get it anyways, they're fun to have around.
