Awesome. How long does it take to get to the top?

That will depend on an individuals fitness level and load. The hike begins at the Chiso's Basin (5400 ft elevation) and you can choose to ascend via either the steeper Pinnacles trail or the gentler Laguna Meadows trail. The elevation at the rim is 7400 ft so you will have gained 2000 ft. I would say the average time to reach the South Rim would be around 4 hours. We took the Laguna Meadows trail, then cut over the Colima trail to the Boot Canyon trail to reach the rim. That route was 8.3 miles and took us closer to 5 hours but we stopped to take a lot of photo's (and catch our breath) a few times. The total hike is between 12 to approx. 14.5 miles depending on which route you take. It can be done as a full, strenuous day hike or a more relaxed 2 day hike which allows you more time to enjoy the view on the rim. Cheers!

I went back in college with friends, around '88.

Now I want to get back.

Me and my friends went every year from 95 to 03 in college-then i went back a few times but it has been along time since I've been back. I named my daughter Emory, after Emory peak in the park. Would like to go again soon. Thinking of camping with family on one of the back roads there, but also don't want to drag my brand new truck through a bunch of thorns and mesquite trees. Wonder which road would be best to not rag out a new vehicle?

Did hike the south rim with my X-wife. We were up at the top and a lightning storm passed over. We ran as fast as we could for cover-will never forget that, it was right after that trip we realized we were having a baby. She passed away over 2 years ago and those memories are now bitter sweet. That is part of the reason I have not been back since. Also lost my best friend to a brain tumor back in 2017-he was always on those college trips. That park always held a special place in my heart. Thanks for sharing!

one of the many things I'll never forget about the hike is the night we camped on the trail. It was thundering, it was a constant thunder. The sound of the thunder was continuous for hours just rolling through the canyon
