My BIL's dad passed away today. He owns a farm in Grant Co. OK. his grandfather got the the land in the land rush in 1889 and they have been on the property every since. Not many farmers around that can still say that. God Speed Ernie.

My grandfather worked for Shawnee Mills and sold flour I assume to those who participated in the land rush. My father was born in 1899 and lived in a tent for three years of his young life on the land rush territory. Pictures from those times show a very bleak life style in many cases. It's rare the land has remained in the same hands for 130 years.

A buddy of mine's family has quite a bit of land in the Pond Creek area. Great hunting land out there. Pheasants, sandhill cranes, ducks, geese, deer, turkeys, jackrabbits, basically a little bit of everything out there

A buddy of mine's family has quite a bit of land in the Pond Creek area. Great hunting land out there. Pheasants, sandhill cranes, ducks, geese, deer, turkeys, jackrabbits, basically a little bit of everything out there they are just outside of Medford. been thru pond creek many times headed to Enid. I worked two summers in the wheat harvest at Deer Creek for my h.s. band director's brother. They farmed wheat and rye, raised sheep, and grew alfalfa for hay (heavy bales). Only part of it I liked was running the combine. Plowing all day was the most boring thing I've ever done. Their big farm is now split up among various family members. Flat as a pancake up there, too - could see a smokestack in Blackwell some thirty miles east on a clear day. The experience cemented the idea in my mind that a college education might be a good thing after all.

My BIL's farm is halfway between deer creek and medford, and yes, it's flat as hell.

It officially began at noon on April 2, 1889 with a cannon shot. 50,000 settlers raced in to claim land that had previously been given to Indian tribes via treaty for previous stolen lands. The settlers that jumped the gun and got the best land are still known as Sooners...

Most of the old farm land has condos or houses built on them. People just don't farm like the little man used to.
