Bought first yak. Ascend 12t. Mounting a FF elite7. Wanted to know to mount on left or right side of yak on tracks. Will be mounting on a piece of cutting board i will be sliding on track along with transducer arm.
I dont have an anchor trolley mounted yet that will be added next. Suggestions appreciated

I am right-handed. I cast with my right hand (obviously!) but I reel with my left hand. Because of this, prefer my FF on the right side for the following reasons:

1) I can operate the controls more easily with my right hand

2) When possible, I position my kayak and cast over the left side of the kayak. It's more comfortable for me to sidearm cast from right to left and then retrieve from the left side of the boat.

I'm with Mike on this in that how you cast and how you plan on landing a fish (sometimes the fish doesn't listen) but that goes into my locator positioning.

When I'm sitting in the boat as a right hander, I can can manipulate the buttons with more accuracy with my right hand. + one for right hand side for me.

Second as a right hander I cast better cross body to my left than backhanding a cast to my right. I can do both but tend to cast to the left of the boat given the choice. +2 for locator on the opposite side for me.

When landing a fish as a right hander, I tend to control the rod better with my strong side hand / arm so rod in right hand and net in left hand. +3 for locator on the left side for me.

Bottom line leave enough cable so that if one side doesn't work for you then you can flip it to the other side. You get to make your own list as to what is important to you. Have fun and remember, you can always change it one way or another.

I'm right handed, have my garmin 73 mounted on the left side on a large ram mount so the head unit is more over my left foot than over the rail, and I can change the angle for when I stand vs sit. Transducer is on a yak attack arm on the right side since my anchor trolley is on the left. The location of the sonar head unit has not interfered with my casting / retrieving or landing a fish, yet grin
