Been thinking about hitting Lavon soon...it'll be a first time visit for me. What pointers can you all share?

Is the lake relatively safe or is it dangerous to run?

I don't want inexperience to ruin a trip.

Thanks in advance.

Safe to run until you get up north in the wood, just like any lake. Pretty tough lake for bass until you fish it for a while. Have fun.

Up North is a relative term on Lavon. It was originally 20 feet lower than it is now at full pool. Look at your map and run the depth down 20 feet. That's where it is safe to run w/o Timber. The raising of the lake didn't really include clearing boat lanes up the Trinity or Groves arms. However, there are old levies that are mapped really well, so you can make the run. Basically on the Groves Side, be careful north of the Power Plant; on the Trinity side, be careful north of Colin Park Marina.

Be careful north of Collin Park Marina? Seriously?

I am serious. The middle of that section is full of timber. Yes, there are paths on either side but the lake is full now, and there is timber just under the surface. Maybe I'm over analyzing or providing warnings where none is needed.
I am talking about the Collin Park North Ramp, then the area up to the other marina (south of Seis Lagos)...

Here is someone running the timber from North to South when the lake was 7 foot or so low....

I can see your point. No offense intended.

The west side of the island can be treacherous. Go around the east side.

Seems I need to find a map along with Google Map to learn it. Y'all are great folks for helping a newbie out.

I'm planning to launch around Tickey Creek or Brockdale Park. As these are off the 380 which is where I would be coming from.

That is unless I go see Tiltman first

You're launching on the shallow silty stumpy end of the lake.

Unless your waiting a few months to go I'd advise against it.
