I have a 2001 Yamaha 400 that has run great for 20 years. Lately it dies if not at half choke. Runs great under the gas but won’t idle. Do I need to clean the carb? If so how much will a shop want for that? I looked at a video and it’s more than I want to take on.

Run a heavy dose of Seafoam through it and if that doesnt fix it a new carb might be better than labor hours to rebuild it. It definitely sounds like a carb problem

Yep. Pull the bowl and clean idle jet. Might as well do the main jet too.

Easy money amigo.

Take the breather off. Rev it up and hold it there, check it down by hand till it nearly dies, remove hand and let it rev up. Repeat a dozen times. That may suck whatever is in the jets on through.

That’s borderline erotic sounding.

I had a 2000 Big Bear 400, and in later years the carb needed to be replaced. But, if you can get the jets cleaned you might get off cheap. The Big Bear carb was hard to get to, as I remember. But, if you can get the carb off, cleaning the jets is easy.

I think there is a video of fogging the carb with seafoam online - you basically fog it until it dies a couple of times to clean the carb. Might try that if you can get to the intake.
