Some I do with wild turkey marabou. The wet one in the photo is with wild turkey, so Is the one above it. Wild turkey can have those contrasting tips that I like. Any turkey hunter can supply them. I tell my daughter to grab handfuls of it and put it in a gallon ziploc. This idea you need the skin preserved or frozen or strung and attached to the feathers is ridiculous to me. Give me the bag, I’ll sort them out when I need them.

The hackle around the hook shank can really vary in color, just whatever you like. Chartreuse is generally strong. Less full, tungsten beaded ones sink faster. Brass beaded ones sink slower. You can weight them with wire or leave unweighted. The idea is to be able to present them at the depth and pace the fish want. Right now, it’s deep and very slow.

Topwater flies are fun, but good luck with those in January.

Man’s sized large on glove sizing so not so tiny on my hands or the fish.

I did sink a few crappie condos, several bamboo bunches sunk with concrete, to attract fish. Those seem to work in a lake that’s a little lacking in natural cover.
