Y'all have no kids so this is a great chance to meet up in different areas, sight see, enjoy areas of tgecstate you have not been to ans make some memories. Alternate trips with her each week then meet somewhere for a weekend. 4 months will fly by. Upon further reflection, I actually agree with Mark. If your company is better than mine and it would only be 4-6 months, then this would be a cool approach. But if your company is like mine and 6 months can turn into 6 years, then I stand by my original comments.

I've done it and would do it again. Was able to pay off the house with the extra money. You kind of get use to the traveling back in forth but leaving out on Sunday's is no fun, especially during Football Season.

I did it 6 or 7 times but I was single the first 4 times. I set up job order cost systems at all of our truss plants in Cibolo, Tomball, Meridian. Ms., and Jacksonville Fl.. All travel expenses paid and home on weekends if I chose to be. I banked a bunch of money because I did not have to buy food and was on per diem. Also, airline miles. I had many friends in Austin so sometimes I would just spend the weekend there. Another time I had to travel to northeast AL. as part of a team to turn around a plant that supplied components to mobile home plants. The GM left and himself and admin assistant took price lists and bill of material files with them. It was Monday to Friday with an occasional weekend.

Consider specifying the work hours. I am sure you will give the company their time but it would be nice to have it understood that you will be there til 5 on Friday afternoon and 7AM on Monday but not on the same weekend. Travel will go alot better if you can start the journey home at noon on Friday and leave early on Monday morning to be on site say at 10AM or so.

If you're going to take an extended work assignment like that, then do it BEFORE you have kids. I assume that your wife would be free to come visit you (when you aren't working)?
I'd ask for every perk you could think of - accommodations, meals, laundry service, etc. Also be clear on the work hours as stated by fisherinok. Just because you're on an "away" work assignment doesn't mean they get to have you work at all hours of day & night

Amtrak runs from FW to SA... you could do online work while commuting, or she could. And less idiots to deal with.

No children, no brainer. Just do it. I never back down, full steam ahead. 25-1/2 years with the same company, travelled all over the country and to Europe. Have moved 4 times all within Texas. Has served me and my family well, financially. Those special assignments may not come back around.

It was strange the first week but then flew by. I know that is different than 6 months, but I think you'd look back at the time fondly. And the Alamo City and Dallas are MUCH closer then Tucson and Dallas. Yall can still kick it on the reg.

Then you could purchase a decent camper or rent a house and be comfortable, and come out even more ahead when it's all over.

Assuming the package is "good enough" for you, do it! It won't hurt to be apart for a week or two and whatever arrangements you make for weekly/biweekly/whatever get-togethers will be one h*ll of a lot better  I spent 24 years doing 2 week to 3 month on-site jobs and it went very well, even with kids. Was especially some of the locations when DW & kids visited over long weekends, got to see a lot of things they probably never would have seen if I didn't do it.
Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

I’ve done a few jobs down in S A. I would leave here at 3:00am Monday mornings and take 35 down running 85 mph most of the way. On fridays we would cut out at noon and take 281 and a six pack home.

My wife went to Norway for a 6-week assignment and ended up being there for 5 months. I did not mind and neither did she and besides, they paid for her hotel plus $400 week per deim, they furnished breakfast and lunch at the office, she only had to pay for dinner and entertainment. We made out good on her trip but there was no way we could travel back and forth the weekend.

So my name got thrown in the hat to go down to San Antonio to head up 2 big data center projects kicking off soon. Don't really know any of the details yet except that it would be for "4 to 6 months". The higher ups are working on a "travel package" right now but I dont know any of the details. I'm guessing it will include accommodations, travel expenses and pay incentives. I talked to my wife and if the money is right she is on board. But I'm not sure how much money would be "worth it". How do I go about evaluating that? We're in the first year of our first home purchase and only the 2nd year of our marriage (but no kids). Not sure how I feel about leaving for 6 months, even if I could come home on weekends. SA is a long ways for weekend trips.
What does the OT have to say about extended work travel? What’s your alternative? Make your decision from there.
