If a person was wanting to trade his own handgun for another, how would you know if the handgun that you were trading for was not on a list of stolen guns somewhere?

Would an FFL dealer be able to access some list of stolen guns or something? Or do you just get a bill of sale from the seller to show that you bought it in good faith?

I've sold a handgun before and got the persons name, address, DL # and the type and serial number of the gun and keep that info in a safe. That part meets due diligence on my part, but what about the gun you are buying or trading for?

Texas is a good faith state. Some police departments have a trade spot at the department and would probably be willing to run the numbers if you ask. If you're that worried finding a PD who would run it is probably the way to go. IDK if any ffl's check that...

A dealer has no way of knowing. But a dealer has to get all of the persons trade in I do and put it in his log book.

That said I’ve been in the industry for 30 years and only know of 3 or 4 guns that were traded in or sold to a dealer and stolen.
Most crooks will just sell one on a street corner.

Bob gets around. I sold all my guns to him last week also, and I don't even know what he looks like because he was wearing a hoodie and mask just like I was.

The gun I was buying or trading for? I I would still take the ser number and give it to local law-enforcement to run it through the system. I Did this a few months ago on a revolver.

This, get it run. We come across stolen guns constantly. Not at all uncommon down here.

They will not run it through the system just for kicks. You must live in a small town where they have nothing to do.
If you think the dude selling you a gun is a crook don’t buy it.

Yea, Actually they will run it for you. I live in Llano County I don’t know if that’s big or small but that’s where I live. I actually ran the serial number on that revolver in Gillespie County which is larger than Llano County. I was not the buyer, I was running it for somebody else.

Local PD here says they won't run a gun serial number unless it is used in a crime or related somehow to a crime or theft of some sort. They say that they can be subject to disciplinary action if they do. They also cannot just willy nilly run drivers License numbers either. Don't throw flaming bags of BS at me, I am just telling you what the officer told me on the phone. He did advise a bill of sale with minimum info he would get if he were buying or selling to an individual. I am probably the first goober to actually try to do the right thing or something. I've only bought new guns before.

I can understand not running a driver’s license. Just asking that could (and probably) raise some red flags. But running a serial number off a firearm seems different. Plus, if it gets a hit, the hard part of their work is done for them (potentially finding a stolen gun and the person in possession of it). If they’re too busy to be running serial numbers off guns, I understand it as a policy.
