Fished from Rowlett Creek Preserve entrance to Firewheel Pwky... No bites, and saw no bait fish. I did notice a bunch of fishing gear trash (which is terrible) in the area, so it tells me other folks have been fishing the same spots.
Questions:
1. Where are the bait fish? If there are no bait fish, then there inherently are no sandies and/or crappie.
2. Has anyone had luck in this area?
3. Is there better fishing north or south of this area?

Thanks!

I was at Woodland Basin Nature area last weekend and saw a minnow. Just the one, and I had to hike out quite a ways into some muddy areas just to see that (it was right where the creek forks).

Agree about the trash, though. It's a feeder creek for Lake Ray Hubbard, so anything that goes downstream eventually ends up in our drinking water. I'm currently working on starting a cleanup effort with the City of Garland, and maybe some work on getting better trails cut along the creek out closer to the lake. I'll probably post in here once we start work, but in the mean time, I've been thinking about just walking the banks and picking up what I can. It really is kinda sad to see how fellow fishermen treat our waters sometimes.

Man I hope you didnt drive from Granbury to fish RC. Just because you do not see bait, does not mean there are no fish. When the water is this cold they aren't going to be at the surface very often to see them. RC is hit or miss and the fish are hammered every day so you have to finesse them. I would be looking around the 66 area if I fished there. I caught sandies 2 at a time there in september (I met a friend there to pickup something and decided to fish) RC is the worst creek in DFW IMO. Trashed, hammered daily and lots of small fish are kept out of there and I very rarely fish it.

I split time between Dallas and GB... would have been quite the drive just to fish an over-fished creek! lol

Thanks for the pointers. I will scope out / try other creeks instead.

I agree. It is appalling how people will camp out and leave every piece of trash that they brought on the ground. Needs more enforcement and more places to throw trash. I may have missed it but didn’t notice an trash receptacles even up in the parking area. Hopefully the efforts with the City of Garland help get that area in better shape.

2 questions;

1. What’s the furthest upstream anyone has seen these fish migrate?

2. How far up stream is too far to fish?

I’m sure some fish travel a long way but where do the larger schools stop.

Went to Miller bridge and Preserve area this morning, and only got a dink.

Just wonder if the bass spawning finish already.

Spawn is on full blast and the fish are way upstream on all the places I have fished. Got a big hybrid way up yesterday too

You can get an easy limit at rowlett if you know what you’re doing and where to go. If it’s anything like the last time I went it will be a lot of catching but there will also be a lot of sorting, appeared to be a lot of barely legal fish up the creek. I’m betting that creek lost the majority of fish to the lavon gates when they were open.

Yes. Agree that Rowlett creek lost the majority of fish as Lavon dam is currently still releasing water.

Depends on how much CFS. I believe when the gates are wide open at 2000 + CFS rowlett is generally not good.

There’s a reason rowlett has slow years whenever the gates are open all spring.

Rowlett Creek tends to attract a very LOW class of people year after year. Why on earth TP&W doesnt pay more attention to this area I have no idea. More illegal fish leave Lake Ray Hubbard through that creek in 1 month than the entire main lake in a whole year. Its an epidemic that TP&W is turning a blind eye to. I did read they caught some cast netters there last year but I see it on dang near a daily basis but hardly ever see a Game Warden. They would need ticket books as thick as phone books out there and they would still run out of tickets to write every day.

Bottom line is some us that frequent that area know the real reason why they dont pay more attention to it. Its just not politically correct to say it.

Seriously though, until someone shows me the flyer passed out to all the sandies in RC that the lavon gates are open and to go all way to the other side of the lake at that moment, I beg to differ

Hard to tell from Google maps. Where can one park for public access to this creek? It meanders through a lot of territory.
