Hey yall!

Appreciate everyone's help on fishing for Carp and Buff's. I got my hair rigs down, got my bolt rigs down, chumming game is alright, doing alright catching buff and carp.

I want a "Trophy" buffalo. TPWD says a trophy is 32 inches in length. I caught a 28 inch fish that was 25lbs, so I figured I am getting close. BUT after getting intel from some guys and looking at other records with weights and lengths, I think I am pretty far off. Seems a 32 inch is going to weigh at least 40lbs. These things get super fat and deep before they get much longer is my take away. And the difference between a 28inch fish and a 32 inch fish is A LOT more than I was thinking. Only 5inches but 15+lbs.

I have been fishing Grapevine since its close to my house, is there a 32inch buffalo in Grapevine? Would I be better of fishing Lewisville for a record or??? I am into those Lakes since I usually only get a few hours to fish and those spots are within 15 minutes of my crib.

Where the big buffs at!?!

I would have checked both but that was not an option. If you have managed a 28 incher, there are going to be bigger fish that you may have to cull through the smaller ones to get to.

A 32-inch buffalo is definitely a trophy. The lake record for Grapevine is 36 inches and just over 30 pounds, so there are 32 inch fish in Grapevine. Catching one is just a matter of running through the numbers. I have caught several buffs over 32 inches but they are few and far between. Buffs are one of my favorite fish to catch and I put this picture of the state catch and release black buffalo (36.25 inches and 26.60 pounds) on the back of my book, “The Art of Fishing for Records.â€

If you are interested in a fish that size, I would recommend chumming with range cubes, then using range cubes as bait. Here is a video of how I rig them.

If you are looking for tips on how to catch record and trophy fish, I recommend getting a copy of my book. There are lots of secrets in there on how to accomplish your goals.

Neither of those lakes would be my choice for a trophy size Buffalo, though there are a few present. Great for numbers though!

I agree. If I really had to catch a 32-inch buffalo, I would head to Lake Fork for a week.

Think about Decker Lake near Austin if you have a few days.

What about White Rock? My office is just a few miles from the Rock.

Reading back posts on here from 10 years ago, when people would really share lots of info, White Rock came up many times a top place for a giant buff or carp. Has that changed?

White Rock has similar sizes to Grapevine

Those 40s are incredibly rare though! I've spent loads of time there without one, but I've definitely had quite a few fish over 32 inches

Lake Whitney. Fishing that lake at night with lights you wouldn't believe some of the buffs we have seen / taken.

It's only a good cast if you catch a fish...
Personal Best: 11.62 lbs
