Just went today and ran the boat/tried to fish Houston and Sheldon. Put in on the south end at Duessen Park.

Seeing how nasty that lake was made me ask myself.. Why are all the Dallas guys so blessed to have some of the best bass fishing in the US less than an hour from them at every direction, and we just get a lake that turns to chocolate after a sprinkle and a lake that is max depth 5ft? Houston was DISGUSTING today. Straight chocolate from the south all the way to Luces Bayou. Not a lake worth a damn to fish either.

The Highway 99 construction and the Torrenos neighborhoods in Liberty County have really wreaked havoc on Lake Houston. It was bad about getting muddy before but now it's many times worse. Even after heavy rains the bayou used to stay fishable and the East Fork would clear up in a short time. Those days are over. The developers of the neighborhoods did not meet drainage standards and should be prosecuted for violations and the EPA should go after them with federal charges also. It used to be a fun lake to fish as you could catch a lot of bass even though it was never good for big bass. Now it is terrible.

They really did a number on the lake. Between taking all the wood out and the drainage muddying the lake up. But it still has loads of fish in it. Buddy and I caught almost 4 limits worth of 2-4 pounders early December in half a day. Found a pattern by accident that I would have NEVER guessed would happen. Honestly probably won't ever happen again either.

I drove down to test drive a boat there yesterday and yep it was chocolate milk. Don't know how it fishes but that was some DIRTY water. Started the test drive by towing in a fish n ski. Fortunately he was pretty close to the Duessen ramp.

Yep, it is all of the construction from 99 and over on Hwy59 where they are building the new bridge. They are not using any type of silt fence and when it rains it is flowing mud in.

Always has been and always will be a mudhole. But it has fish.

Just don’t fish it when the water is cold. It’s Florida strain and they hate cold muddy water.

I think the lake is as muddy as it will ever get right now. It's a very tough winter lake, especially when it is muddy.

Ha! How funny, pretty sure I saw you there in that bass boat. Probably around 4:30-5pm ish...?

Yeah that dude in that yellow fish and ski was having problems when I put in at the ramp. Don’t know if you recall seeing a grey 22’ center console with a yellow lab in the truck bed but that was me! I was pulling out when you were getting stuff ready

Maybe I’m just missing something.. is the lake itself worth fishing aside from the forks and Luces? I’ve caught fish there, but it seems that whole end of the lake south of 1960 is just a shallow structureless mud hole

Lake Houston is what I call a "Southeast Texas Mudhole." JMO, I wouldn't fish the south end of the lake below FM1960 if someone paid me. Luces Bayou can be decent but it is generally full of boats. I know someone will chime in saying "You just don't know how to fish the lake." It's all yours, brother!

Be safe,

There are certain stretches that hold fish but normally only during the summer when the water gets green. For the most part your in the bayou or rivers. I dont fish south of 1960 but maybe 5 hours a whole year. No need to. With all the silting in the good cuts you can't get in to anymore

Interesting.. This is the main place I've done worth a damn south of 1960. It's pretty hard to get into it and gets shallow until you actually get up in the creek.

I've tried various areas on the south end of the lake but they are all just shallow banks with little to no structure.

I'd like to learn how to run up the west Fork, never been that way

But again, this all leads back the original question.. Why can't us Houston folks have a half [censored] decent lake to fish that is close to home.. Duessen Park really is a super nice park/ramp.. Just a [censored] of a lake to go with it

At this point, I've pretty much made it the lake I take the boat to after it hasn't been ran in a while and I just wanna run the hell out of it. Little to no traffic, open water on the south end to open her up..... When I'm done with that, load on the trailer, drive 5 mins down the road and fish Sheldon....

Dang DK I haven’t been able to get into that creek in a few years. It used to be one of the best ones south of 1960
