Hey yall!
Appreciate everyone's help on fishing for Carp and Buff's. I got my hair rigs down, got my bolt rigs down, chumming game is alright, doing alright catching buff and carp.
I want a "Trophy" buffalo. TPWD says a trophy is 32 inches in length. I caught a 28 inch fish that was 25lbs, so I figured I am getting close. BUT after getting intel from some guys and looking at other records with weights and lengths, I think I am pretty far off. Seems a 32 inch is going to weigh at least 40lbs. These things get super fat and deep before they get much longer is my take away. And the difference between a 28inch fish and a 32 inch fish is A LOT more than I was thinking. Only 5inches but 15+lbs.
I have been fishing Grapevine since its close to my house, is there a 32inch buffalo in Grapevine? Would I be better of fishing Lewisville for a record or??? I am into those Lakes since I usually only get a few hours to fish and those spots are within 15 minutes of my crib.
Where the big buffs at!?!

I would have checked both but that was not an option. If you have managed a 28 incher, there are going to be bigger fish that you may have to cull through the smaller ones to get to.

A 32-inch buffalo is definitely a trophy. The lake record for Grapevine is 36 inches and just over 30 pounds, so there are 32 inch fish in Grapevine. Catching one is just a matter of running through the numbers. I have caught several buffs over 32 inches but they are few and far between. Buffs are one of my favorite fish to catch and I put this picture of the state catch and release black buffalo (36.25 inches and 26.60 pounds) on the back of my book, “The Art of Fishing for Records.†If you are interested in a fish that size, I would recommend chumming with range cubes, then using range cubes as bait. Here is a video of how I rig them. https://youtu.be/4HJNrljkWGI If you are looking for tips on how to catch record and trophy fish, I recommend getting a copy of my book. There are lots of secrets in there on how to accomplish your goals.

Neither of those lakes would be my choice for a trophy size Buffalo, though there are a few present. Great for numbers though!

But for now... I am going to continue my quest locally.
I will get this sum beach!

Reading back posts on here from 10 years ago, when people would really share lots of info, White Rock came up many times a top place for a giant buff or carp. Has that changed?

Lake Whitney. Fishing that lake at night with lights you wouldn't believe some of the buffs we have seen / taken.
It's only a good cast if you catch a fish... Personal Best: 11.62 lbs

Nice to know. Man I wish I had to more time to fish these other waters as sounds like they are higher probability. Hoping to get a few hours in Friday even though the weather looks junk... Cant catch trophy buffs sitting at home...

If you are getting that close you should catch the one you are after.

No luck today.
Short trip. One bite but didn't hook up. Did learn a few things though. Especially about location...on a micro scale.
I'll be back at it soon enough.

Just this guy today and a few 10ish lb carp. Amazing how different the carp bite vs the buffs. I lost a big buffalo, would have got my record... But he popped off as soon as I got eyes on him.

Dan90210 What lake is that ? Grapevine. I actually went yesterday. Beautiful day but water was COLD COLD. Fished three hours, had one bite and caught it. Was about a 6lb carp. Did not even get any of those little buffalo nibbles. Fished with 4 rods and only had to rebait the one time after I got the carp. They were for sure not biting. Well give it another go next week!

You may need to find some deeper water. How deep are you fishing/casting to?

You may need to find some deeper water. How deep are you fishing/casting to? 10-12 feet. On a long cast I might get to 15 feet. But usually my bait (and chum) are sitting in 10ish feet.

At this time of year, I try to fish in water over 10 feet deep. However, I saw fish in an area yesterday that is less than 6 feet deep.

Pulled a 32 x 30 inch buff out of Ray Hubbard on my trip to Dallas last February. Weighed 26 lbs. Next biggest was 30 x 30 and weighed 24 lbs. Pic in my signature if the site still allows images from non secure hosted web sites.
PB common = 41 lbs PB mirror = 22.5 lbs PB buff = 26 lbs

I have to get back out there after them now that all this cold weather might have passed.
Friday's are the only days I am able to fish and every Friday for the last 5 or 6 weeks has been really poor weather.
Love seeing these big buff pics!

Give a man a fish he can eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and you can get rid of him for the entire weekend!
