I have this combo:
Daiwa Tatula CT 6.3, Daiwa Tatula 7’ glass cranking M
Anyone use a 6.3 for deep cranking (12’-20’)? Trying to decide if I should trade sell this reel and get a 5 gear.
I’ve only used this rod for shallow stuff so far but bought some deep cranks today.

I use a Daiwa Tatula SV TW in 6.3:1 for XD6+ on a Dobyns Rods Champion XP DC 805CB Glass rod.

It would work fine but a 5:1 ratio would be easier to reel and have more fighting power. But, the 6:3 is such a versatile reel for other baits, too. The 5:1 is a deep crank reel only. I very rarely deep crank so it wouldn’t pay for me to have a 5:1 reel. I used to have one but sold it and bought more 6:3:1 setups.

Awesome. Thanks y’all.
With this particular rod, would y’all ever use this combo for anything other than cranking? Like jerk baits?

I personally would prefer a 5.x for deep cranking. 5XD, 6XD & bigger.
Partly what I'm used to, and partly, I think the slower gears help.
That said, you see a lot pro's throwing 6.x and even 7.x for big cranks.
That is a perfectly fine outfit if the 6.x works for you.
You could use that outfit for almost any movement bait, jerks, chatter baits, topwater, lipless, spinner bait. Just a good rig. I love to throw chatter baits on a glass rod.

The 7’ Medium Glass rod is going to be like a spaghetti noodle when throwing larger cranks.
I used a 6.3:1 for all cranking but once I threw a buddies winch I was blown away. All the sudden it takes zero effort to throw the deepest of cranks.
However, I rarely get into situations and have never caught a deep Crankbait bass. If you have a fast Abu Revo Is trade a Winch so you can get the full cranking experience.

No Revos here. Sorry. How much do you want for your winch?

I've used both for deep cranking and catch way more on the 6:1 vs the 5:1. I will even use a 7:1 on occasion.

It'll work just fine, but a 5:1 will work more efficiently... Dan

I recently sold my last 5.1:1 gear ratio reel that I held onto for 8XD-10XD's and switched to a 6.2:1 for them. After you retie a dozen or two times you end up cutting enough line off your spool that it gears down a little bit and works well for me. I'll use a 7 gear on cranks down to about a 6XD/DD22 mainly if I'm cranking shallower water and banging the bottom with the bait.

I remember back when 5.1 was considered high speed...I'm getting old! Amen Back in the day when a lot of reels were 5.1:1 to 6.1:1 there was only one reel that was 7.1:1 IIRC. Man that thing was considered smokin' and there were not many people who wanted anything that fast!
